The Garrison Powerplant is located on the Missouri River near Riverdale, North Dakota.
This is a five-unit powerplant completed in 1960 with a rated capacity of 517 MW. Since
installation in 1956-60, the turbine runners have continued to crack and had
been repaired annually,
causing concerns about the reliability of the units and potential for catastrophic failure.
A major powerplant rehabilitation study was completed in March 1995 to evaluate measures
to restore the project to its original power generating
capability. Other measures were also investigated to increase the project output capability
above the original capacity. The study was approved and work proceeded on to design and construction
phases for turbine runners replacement at the project.
